Did you know that one of the world’s oldest and most aromatic wines is produced right here on the Setúbal Peninsula? Moscatel de Setúbal is a true regional treasure, with a rich history, an unmistakable aroma, and a special place at the table and in the hearts of those who try it.
What is Moscatel de Setúbal?
Moscatel de Setúbal is a fortified wine, made mostly from the Muscat of Alexandria grape variety. It’s sweet and full-bodied, with intense aromas of orange blossom, honey, orange peel, and dried fruits. It can be enjoyed young, but older vintages develop greater complexity over time, revealing notes of caramel, dried fruit, spices, and wood.
A Short History
Moscatel production in the region dates back to ancient times, but it was in the 19th century that the wine gained international fame, largely thanks to the company of José Maria da Fonseca, one of the most iconic wineries on the Setúbal Peninsula (and the first to bottle wine in Portugal). The wine was exported to various countries and was often part of long-haul shipments.
How is Moscatel made?
After harvesting, the grapes are fermented for a short period. Then, natural grape brandy is added to stop the fermentation, concentrating the grape’s natural sugars. The wine is then aged, usually in wooden barrels, for a minimum of 18 months (though it can age for many more years!). The prolonged contact with wood is what gives Moscatel its unique and complex flavor.
Moscatel de Setúbal vs. Moscatel Roxo
Did you know there’s a rare “cousin” of traditional Moscatel? Moscatel Roxo is made from a special purple grape variety, resulting in an even rarer, more aromatic wine with a slightly different profile, even more floral and exotic. Definitely worth a try!
How and When to Enjoy Moscatel:
Pairings: pairs beautifully with cheeses, traditional Portuguese desserts (like Azeitão rolls or egg pudding), and even foie gras.
Serving Temperature: ideally between 10ºC and 12ºC (50–54ºF).
Fun Fact: it can also be used in modern cocktails — a perfect twist of tradition and innovation.
Where to Taste Moscatel de Setúbal?
In the region, there are plenty of places to enjoy this nectar of the gods: from historic wineries in Azeitão, Quinta do Anjo, or Palmela, to the Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos, or even at any café, restaurant, or bar across the Setúbal Peninsula.
Moscatel de Setúbal is much more than just a sweet wine, it is a reflection of the region’s culture, tradition, and identity. If you haven’t tried it yet, now’s the time. And if you’re already a fan… then you know exactly what we’re talking about!
